Abstract
Endless carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) have become a major construction material in many lightweight applications. Especially in the aviation industry, thermoplastic matrix materials are currently gaining in popularity due to their enhanced machinability and versatile material characteristics. However, the industry has still to cope with high production costs due to the scarcity of production capacities for carbon fibres. While on the one hand costs for the semi-finished products are high, production processes for carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTP) on the other hand have still a low resource efficiency as they create a significant amount of scrap-pieces and left-overs to be disposed of. In order to increase the resource efficiency and establish a more sustainable CFRTP production, a process is developed by the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. and its partners to automatically cut these CFRTP remnants to chips of unified dimensions and reuse them in the production of long-fibre reinforced CFRTP laminates.
